Skin is the single largest organ, covering the length and breadth of your body. It protects you from harmful diseases and safeguards the organs it encases. The skin is also delicate and requires it to be treated with love and care. It absorbs everything it comes in contact with through the pores present on the surface. Therefore, if toxic and harsh chemicals are constantly being bombarded on the surface, it will absorb this and gradually accumulate it. These accumulated chemicals will cause a lot of problems later in life. Harmful chemicals such as laureth sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate and parabens are present in almost all manufactured soap bars, body washes and shampoos. Add to that the fact that they also contain artificial colors and preservatives and you will be harming your skin in the long-run. It is better to use natural soap that contains organic ingredients.

This kind of cleanser is especially useful for people with sensitive skin, children and those suffering from some skin disease. Most artificially manufactured detergents contain many harmful ingredients and lathering agents that strip the skin of its natural moisture. In fact, artificial bars do not contain a key component, glycerin, which is required for moisturizing the skin. This is due to the fact that the manufacturing process eliminates it. Natural soap, on the other hand, contains this so your skin will retain its original shine.

Moreover, the manufacturing process for creating artificial detergents, in fact, harms the planet. As natural soap is almost always made by hand, it is wholesome. Natural oils, butters and scents are kept for sometime so that they can interact with each other. Once dried, the cleanser is packed by hand so all the goodness of natural oils is passed on to the user. Those suffering from dermatitis or eczema will find organic soaps very beneficial. The condition is characterized by itchy skin and patches of rash on the surface. Those having an eczema skin issue will only add to the problem by using harsh chemicals.

Although there are many types of handmade cleansers available, it is best to select ingredients that will improve your skin. Lavender mini soaps, for example, are anti-bacterial and prevent inflammation of the skin. If you have cuts and bruises, the healing process with be hastened by using this natural soap. These kinds of soaps also contain herbal ingredients. An herbal green tea cleanser is good for ageing skin as it contains antioxidants. Chamomile, lemongrass, spearmint are other naturally occurring components that will help those looking for younger skin. Others suffering from a skin condition can try goat milk soap. It consists of oats that naturally exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin at the same time moisturizing the exfoliated skin with goat's milk. Ensure, however, that only natural goat's milk is used in its original form and not the powdered or watered down version. Honey is another component you should look out for as it is packed with a number of vitamins. Make sure that the raw form of honey is used, without it being heated to retain its natural goodness.

Why don't they make more natural soaps in nice rounded shapes? Every other soap is nice and rounded, so why not with these too?

There's a great little shop downtown that has some of this, and I get it every time I'm there.

Are these better for the environment than regular commercial soap?

If there's anything that I want to keep from getting in my body, it's chemicals. So, I try to use everything I can that's made of natural ingredients, soap included.
